Day Activity Programs otherwise known as "Day Habilitation Programs" offer individuals experiencing disabilities the opportunity to use and develop their abilities in the community through recreation, community involvement, and volunteerism. The many programs Coarc operates provide a warm, enriching environment in which individuals can learn and experience all that life has to offer. Services can be individualized to pursue a desired lifestyle and are tailored to be as practical and unique as each person's interests and desires.
During the course of a day, activities may include educational, social, recreational, and personal enrichment. Nearly half of all activities take place in the community. Community outings, such as visits to shopping malls, libraries, museums, schools, supermarkets, banks, and other settings, offer opportunities to teach skills that can be used in a person's daily life. Individuals with developmental disabilities do not want to be isolated. They are using these special day programs and working hard to become independent, contributing members of the community through a variety of activities and volunteer work.
Day Habilitation activities offer fascinating new experiences while presenting challenges and responsibilities that increase an individual's self-esteem, mobility, and socialization in the community. Individuals take an active role in planning and implementing activities for themselves on a daily basis. From their personally chosen interests, preferences, and goals, a tailor-made Day Activity Plan is developed. Each plan is as personal and unique as an individual's fingerprints. These programs help people learn to experience making their own choices on a daily basis and further promote the development of feelings of personal responsibility.
Coarc currently offers five group day habilitation program sites through Columbia County: Promenade Hill Center, Dove Hall and Cardinal Hall, located in Hudson; Evergreen Hall, located in Valatie and COARC newest Blended Prevocational and Day Program located in Mellenville.
